The Four Elements in Western Astrology
What are the Four Western Elements?

In Western astrology, the 4 elements are the vital forces, or energies, that make up everything:

  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Air
  • Water

Each element stands for a basic kind of energy or consciousness, and the balance between them influences all aspects of life.

They are closely related with the 12 signs of the Zodiac, or Star Signs. And each Western element is associated with 3 separate Zodiac Signs.

In other words, whereas your Star Sign represents a basic personality type, your western element shows a type of consciousness and method of perception at a much more fundamental level.

The Four Elements and the Zodiac

The Zodiac is a circle made up of the 12 Star Signs, and it represents the apparent journey of the sun throughout one year. The 3 Zodiac Signs of each element are all located 120 degrees from one another, meaning they are in trine with each other.

Each element exists in 3 states:

  • Cardinal
  • Fixed
  • Mutable

That’s right. The 12 signs of the Zodiac represent the 4 Western elements in their different states.

Why Are the Four Elements Important?

The 4 Western elements are the basic principles of life, and absolutely everything is determined by the balance between them.

In fact, when astrologers interpret the astrological chart, they are measuring the balance that exists between the different elements.
